Pros

Lots of responsibility from the beginning. I worked on services that handled 1.5 Million TPS peak traffic servicing 240 million customers. Every team is autonomous and there is no enforcement of specific technology – you choose the right tools for the job and justify it with data.

Cons

Not the same company it was when I joined. Since Jeff stepped down there's been a huge erosion of the day 1 culture. - Lots of bureaucracy. - Innovation has been stifled by fear and intimidation - Lot of high profile departures recently. - Very average pay these days compared to industry leaders in the same tier.

Pros

I like my team's people and respect my direct manager.

Cons

The technical bar is not as refined as you'd expect from a FAANG company. There is loads of tech debt and careless engineering shortcuts are taken every day for the sake of speed. There are layoffs, even of new grads, and it's obvious that executive management couldn't care less about the effect this has on people's lives and morale. Even though I wasn't affected, it scared me a lot. The performance management at Amazon is harsh and not transparent.
