The research lead was describing the take-home assignment task in a meeting. The task was to use topic modeling in order to separate documents (the arxiv dataset) into different groups, then use the discovered topics to create labels for the documents and create a classification model. I pointed out that this is "a self-fulfilling prophecy" as the classification model is going to learn the features that were used to define the topics. The research lead didn't say anything, and the next day the HR sent an updated assignment where the topic modeling part has disappeared, without any explanation. Just a document classification task with the original labels provided in the arxiv dataset. I decided to work on it, mainly to learn something about LLMs, and submitted my solution on time (code + report). The HR confirmed they received it and they will send their feedback soon. But they never did. Nothing for several weeks. I didn't bother to ask what was going on, my opinion of the company was already pretty low. I decided to share my experience in order to avoid other people wasting their time. I don't think the interview was some kind of scam such that people do free work for them, my impression is they are simply unorganized and not very knowledgeable.
