1) You’re asked to draw the temperature profile and how it varies radially. Make sure you indicate where the edge of the casing is and how the temperature then varies in the air. 2) Draw a temperature profile in the vertical direction make sure you indicate which is the bottom and which is the top. 3) The casing is finned and uses a flow of carbon dioxide to cool it. With reference to Newton’s law of cooling explain why forced convection and fins are used 4) Occasionally the radioactive pellet leaks radioactive material into the centre of section. If leaked into the environment this can be harmful. How would you remotely detect this radiation and what considerations must you take into account? Why is the pellet hollow? (consider heat transfer), not actually a question but something we discussed in the interview. This question was about a crane that lift and lowered a radioactive assembly into and out of a pipe or something along those lines. What could cause damage to the crane or assembly during operations and how would you find an engineering solution to these.
