As an FTE, I would be asked to take on work that we are not resourced for or do not align to the overall business strategy - how do you challenge the requesting party, especially when they manage your team's budget?

Design of hotmail like email service
Like I said in the above text there was no real unexpected question. The hardest one would probably be the question about designing an API from scratch on a blank whiteboard.
The hiring manager attempted to sketch what his business unit looked like and then used arrows to show how the market interacted with his business unit. He then asked me to sketch notes on how I would improve it around it. It was odd, but we spent about 45 minutes passing notes to each other with notes as if they were Visio drawings with processes and diagrams. He liked this approach and we often did this as we worked together in my tenure at the company.
