      Executive Team Leader Interview

      Jul 8, 2013
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Sacramento, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Target (Sacramento, CA) in Apr 2013

      Interview

I had applied for this position online, though my College was not listed so I kind of panicked at first. Fortunately, at a job fair, I knew the person representing Target as a graduate. He agreed to put my Resume and Cover Letter in front of the regional recruiter. In three days I received a phone call from the Recruiter who asked me 2 Situational Questions: "Name a time when you provided quality service." and "How do you think your strengths will fit in with Target?". After answering these in about a minute each, she then asked me what City I would like to apply to. Two days afterward, I got an email from Minnesota HQ connecting me with my desired store in California. But first I had to take a long online assessment; replete with math, personality, and situational questions. A week later I was able to schedule my interviews. Another week later I drove to my desired city and interviewed for an hour with a current ETL, more situational questions about "leadership", "working with difficult personalities", "a time when I went above and beyond", and "a time when I made a mistake". I emphasized my teamwork ability, but the ETL told me that they'd (Target) prefer me to boast about MYSELF, not TEAMS. Which I understood. He then explained that I had a 2nd interview immediately after his, because I had just passed the first round. He emphasized that I needed to "Seem more fun and less stiff, even though it was an interview". 2nd Interview was almost exactly the same. Two weeks later arranged a Video-Conference interview with the District Manager and someone else. They asked much more difficult questions, ones which required a lot more experience as a manger to answer: "Name a time in which you were given criticism and had to increase your efforts to match expectations." and "Name a time in which those you were supervising were not pulling their own weight, then with your help were able to greatly improve.". I was even handed a drug screen packet before the interview, with instructions on the steps for accepting a job offer. But, after an awkward interview (the store's internet cut out and we finished over the phone), I was told a week later than I would not be offered a position. I was disappointed that after 5ish interviews and 1.5 months, to be prepared by everyone for an offer, only to be told "No" in a vague email days later.

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at Target (Charlotte, NC)

      Interview

It was a two step interview process. Personable and you are able to interview with not only your direct managers but theirs as well. Provides transparency into your new team. My interview was virtual because I was moving to the area, but I'm sure they do in person for local folks.
