Two interviews, the first was a general one, the second got more into the details. Very polite, explorative, and in two languages (English and German). Among the questions were also personality questions to check the fit into the team, as well as expertise questions related to the job itself.
I applied online. I interviewed at Springer Nature (Londres, Inglaterra)
Interview
Complex process with multiple steps, much easier if you anticipate what you need to prepare for. Very demanding type of interview for entry level, with detailed assessment that matches what an actual editor does - so be prepared.
1.- Send materials (Cover letter, CV, assignments as appropriate: select a few relevant papers, think of a collection/series of Reviews, News and Views type of write up)
2.- Phone interview with manager/chief editor: discuss career, goals, interests, etc.
3.- Phone interview with HR: visa/work permit, salary expectations, availability, compliance, etc.
4.- Written test (online): 2-3 papers to read and discuss within 1h turnaround, make editorial decisions and justify.
5.- In person written test: 3 papers in 1h, then discuss with team, tons of questions with varying levels of precision, make an editorial decision and justify it. General view of specific field of expertise for the journal I was interviewing for. Key opinion leaders, proposed conferences, authors to look, problematic areas/sensitive topics and how to handle them. General discussion with team members.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Q: Select 5 top institutions to organize a lab visit and think of investigators to reach out to, and what would you discuss with them.
I applied online. I interviewed at Springer Nature (Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg) in Jan 2022
Interview
I applied in November, got a callback at the end of January and made it to the final round of interviews. There are assignments to complete for each round... somewhat "convenient" as you pitch them ideas. The HR team was very unprofessional and unreachable for 8 weeks. Finally after 9 weeks I received a response with a rejection, apparently the HR personnel were on holiday for 3 weeks in and not a single colleague could point this out in my many attempts to contact them. He was also not very friendly. It was hard to gauge the interview process and I could never tell if it was going well.
