The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at Skyscanner (Edimburgo, Escocia)

      Interview

The whole process lasted around 2 months. The first interview happened through Skype with a senior manager. It was a pleasant experience, I had to give examples of projects where I generated growth, where I had to manage people etc. As the job description was rather vague, I asked for more details regarding the actual tasks which I would be performing, and the answers were irrelevant: “We work with data, we work in squads etc.”. I was frustrated with this part of the interview but decided to pursue with the recruitment process as Skycanner has a great reputation within the industry. After this, I was invited for a day in Skyscanner’s HQ where I would have 5 different interviews, from 9am till 3:30pm. 3 were technical interviews and 2 were informal chats to check if my values and personality matched the company culture. I was given a dataset to analyse according to the AARRR metrics, and then create a 30-minute presentation to talk the interviewers through my findings. Challenging exercice but very interesting. My day at the HQ was definitely disappointing. The direct manager did not show up for my presentation because he was on holiday. I delivered the presentation in front of his peer from another country’s squad instead. The person was nice and knowledgeable, but I thought it was quite weird not to have a chance to meet the person I would actually be working for. The next 2 technical interviews were ok, although the Q&A session about AARRR was a bit frustrating - they are not interested in any other metrics apart from the ones from the AARRR framework. The informal interviews were enjoyable, and the two people I met from the marketing and engineer department were very honest and open about the company’s culture, its pros and cons. However, none of the people I met during this day were able to tell me what I would be doing exactly and to give me examples of key tasks for this role. Instead, they all gave me a long speech about “all we do is data driven” “we are super agile and we work in squads”. Alright I understood that, but could you tell me what the missions will be please? After I was offered the job, I told the HR I could not make up my mind with so little information about the role and without meeting the manager. I asked her if we could organise a phone call with the direct manager to discuss it together. She never did, so I did not take the job. Skyscanner seems like a really good company to work for, and I don’t doubt that it’s place where people learn everyday and have a chance to implement new things. But the recruitment process has to be improved: it’s a two-side exercice, where the company also has to prove it’s a good match for the candidate. You cannot ask candidates to work so hard for 6 interviews and hope that they will take the job just because you have cool offices and a nice reputation. My advice: provide details about the job roles, make sure the direct managers attend at least one of the interviews. Show you are invested in candidates as much as they are invested in you.

Recruiter screening followed by hiring manager interview. Fair and independent questions focused on fit for role than abstract company based questions. Discussion like in tone and enjoyable and thorough interview. I didnt feel I was right fit.
