      Field Engineer Interview

      Jan 31, 2011
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 2 days. I interviewed at SLB in Mar 2010

      Interview

1 st day ( 8hrs app.) 8 people almost none with specific oil background, only engineer was necessary. There were only FE applicant, the Tech and Field arrived on 2nd day. 3 tests of 45 mn each (45 questions app/test) (advice: bring a pen and a watch and check how well you do in time compared to what it is left. bear in mind that The level is crescendo, and hard in the end so you better do the first ones very fast to have time for the rest. Most people don't finish it cuz last ones take more than a minute. - logical tests : 3 rows of 3 drawings. Find the last missing. (my advice, practice on online QI test, logical test, psychotecnic test, (cards, dominos, drawings), it helps to see all the logical links you need to examine. - math: basic probabilities, products (a+b)^2, then in the end, problems with calculations and various units to convert ex : gallons/ hr -> cuft/mn - meca (basic but still needs some basic knowledge (archimede force problems, what heigh does a cylinder drowns in the water, knowing density in kg/cuft..., torque calculation, lots of logic hard to prepare for that) then presentation of the company, and pauses.(advice: You need to come and ask loads of questions prepare many at home, be curious, the interviewer in the one interviewed during these sessions. Be curious about the presentation and cut if you need answers... It allows you to show you are curious, to show that you have really thought through about the life of FE) at the end selection of the candidates invited for the next day based on the tests and a bit on the questions asked also (my guess) 2nd day: 10 people app (most from previous day joined by tech and Field applicants) - morning presentation 2 slides prepared previously about yourself and presented in 5 mn where you are aked to describe : - introduce yourself, 3 main strenghs and weaknesses, motivations, least most attractive points of the positions (advice: attractive presentations : use drawings rather than phrases, pictures, header with name, slide number, don't write too much and don't say too much, low rythm of speech, no need to tell everything) - questions in the end: many motivation questions you need to be prepared for (structure in 3 points, best arguments) : 1) why FE (3 reasons to explain clearly and passionately ) 2) why schlum(3 reasons to explain clearly and passionately) 3) give another weakness ( google "weakness strengh interview" to know what's best, my advice:follow this scheme i am ... but i have learned to... , try to choose one that is not relevant to the job, show that you have grown on it, has to be a weakness (ex: "too friendly" does not work) , avoid perfectionnist (say too rigourous and less efficient instead) 4) how do you handle pressure? Have you ever been confronted to pressure? 5) be prepared to be question and pushed to explain any points of your presentation(ex: how does this weakness reflect on your job? So what you hate the most about the job is ... , this is bad isn't it? 6) tell more about your experiences and how you got to wanting to live the life of an FE - group exercices (make a presentation with 4 other candidates of 3 words defining schlum, 3 most and 3 least attrative points about schlum) - build a bridge in 30mn with 20 A4 sheets, cissors, tape and and ruler :constraint, Dim: 1mx80cm must pass under, max stab, max weigh support) . Time constraint reduces by surprise, cissors disappear... . (my advice: work in team, brainstorm, draw a lot, be clear, let everyone speak, and most important google "paperbridge teamwork to get the best hints, one is cut the paper in length to make more foots hence stability. ) -1:1 interview (30mn) 3 exercices under his pressurous look - mount this device for me in five minutes... looks like complicated valve in 20 pieces to mount. (my advice: 2 ways to do it: either look the technical drawing (don't rely on the technical plan too much, it is hard to see what is what on it, ) and the other way is use intuition like puzzle, see what fits in what... I would say: first, see approximately the order of the big pieces (plan) and place them accordingly on the table, try and fit everything looking on the forms like a puzzle. - quick calculation and problems under pressurous look: 1) bottle and its cap cost 110 $ . bottle cost 100$ more than cap. price of cap? (2 mn with papers if you need) 2) you have a 2 bottles, one of 5L and one of 3L. You want to extract 1L of the river. How?(2mn with papers if you need) 3) a waterlilly grows twice its size every day. In 100days, the pond in covered of waterlillys . How many days would it have taken if we started with 2 waterlilys instead of 1. 4) you have 5, 5, 5 and 1 , obtain 24 using all of these numbers

      Interview

It was an on campus hiring. First they shortlisted based on CV. Then second round was group discussion where we were given abstract topics like "Half filled glass of water" and were asked to discuss. This was also an eliminatory round. The final round was more of a HR round, they asked behavioural questions, few puzzles (very easy) and general knowledge questions
