Interview
They reached out to me on LinkedIn a day after I sent in an application. Oddly enough, I bypassed the phone screen as the recruiter said “the team has already evaluated your CV and the team would like to meet you.” I then asked them what kind of interview questions would be asked in the first round but they didn’t reply. I didn’t get to prepare properly as they didn’t even mention what I would be tested on which most companies usually let candidates know before hand.
They moved me straight to the first interview round with an HRBP from China. Unfortunately instead of it being a video call, we had to downgrade to an audio call as their connection was not to good (they admitted it happens a lot) so that left with a missed opportunity to connect face to face. Anyway, we went through basic questions on my CV and I was trying so hard to understand her accent for the most part which was a challenge in itself. I realized they were not interested to get to know me as a person or ask behavioral questions. It was resume based which makes me feel they never really looked through my resume to begin with so I had to paraphrase most of the stuff on there. What was really disappointing is that it seemed like they didn’t have any interest to know how I was as an employee and how I could bring value to their team. It was as if the interviewer was going through a checklist and narrowing down on things I felt wasn’t pertinent to the role. I also think this role is definitely looking at short term success rather than long term and I felt a bit taken back by that. It made me feel like that the main role for HRBP at least for the Singapore team was more on the recruiting side rather than actual partnering with the business on HR policies and programs for long term org objectives which is what I currently do in my role. I honestly think the interviewers are not calibrated and don’t really have a guide for interviewing. Was disappointed by the whole thing to be honest.
The call ended after 40 mins and the interview walked me through their hiring process which she said wasn’t exactly fast but faster than most companies. She said she would write feedback and pass it along to the team for their action. To my surprise, I received an email from LinkedIn that they were no longer going to proceed with my application only 4 hours after I had my interview. I found that pretty quick to make a decision especially after I answered all her questions and provided more examples. I was a bit confused as I feel like there should be more time to think about each candidate (written feedback) and they should have reached out to me in a more personable way. It was a shame - I wish they would have explained more before the interviews to set candidates up for success. This was just my experience though.
Having worked in recruiting myself, we normally don’t reject candidates after 4 hours especially if they meet the requirements for the role and come from good backgrounds. We usually give them more interviews for them to prove their capabilities. I’m hoping they sent the rejection via LinkedIn as a mistake and that it’s just recruitment’s way of clearing out all their LinkedIn applications but that’s probably a long shot. Who knows.
Thank you for taking your time to leave a detailed review. We value your candid feedback and will work with our HR team to fix the problems you mentioned. We strive to deliver a proper experience to our candidates both before and after interviews, so we apologize that our recruiters did not meet these expectations. We hope that you will consider other openings at ByteDance that interest you, and wish you the best of luck in your job search!
The hr contacted me and set up zoom interviews for me. I am not sure if it's phone interviews or directly onsite interviews. Interviewers were mostly in China, so the interviews mostly happened at around 10pm eastern time
