Terrible interview experience with Barclays Japan compliance department.
No management skill was required for the role applied according to the JD. However, at the beginning of the interview, they just asked me you don’t have management skill why you apply the role.
Then one of the interviewer implied there are the analysts and AVPs in the team were senior than me and I am too young to handle the job (currently I am a VP in one of its US peer companies). After that the interviewer stopped ask any questions.
One of the interviewer, the head of compliance also asked me how do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years. First I thought this question is more suitable for junior candidates and since the role I applied is quite senior (a leadership role) so I interpreted this question as how I see the compliance function in 5 to 10 years so I addressed the question with my thoughts on the potential impact of AI within compliance in 5 years and my thoughts to deal with the potential impact. Then the interviewer looks quite confused about what I am talking about and it looks like they are waiting an answer I need to talk my future career path. However, the next step up for the role I applied will be head of compliance, so talking about career paths was quite weird.
