Interview
The process of getting hired at AT&T was by far the most impersonal, sterile and robotic of my career. I was initially contacted through email by a recruiter with a job description and a general salary range. To progress I was required to submit to and personally pay for an online background check. It took about 3 or 4 days for the results to come back. The same recruiter emailed me to set up an interview with one of the countless Call Center Team Leaders, which I completed a couple of days later. I arrived 5 minutes early but had to wait in the lobby for close to 25 minutes. The interviewer was cordial, informative and unobtrusive. His questions were surface level and generalized. He offered good information about the day in day out job specifics and before I left, he let me know that he was pleased with my performance and that he was going to put in a good word to the Call Center Director who would be the final decision maker. A week later, I had the more in depth, closed door, one on one interview with the Director. It was still pretty basic stuff though, sales scenario role play, describe a hurdle from a previous job that I was able to overcome, give reasons why should I be chosen. Etc. I left knowing that he was going to give the corporate recruiter the go ahead to formally extend an offer, which I received by email later the same day.
