I provided an average pay range that I found on the internet and explained that that is where I obtained the info. I do not like playing the low-ball guessing game and wish they would just post their pay range in the job announcement. At one point during the interview the hiring manager made a comment about not having a crystal ball. I really wanted to use his own words and say "I don't have a crystal ball either" when he asked this.
