Used a Que based architecture with data sharding with optimistic lock based miss detection with return to origin across data centers. Details would be cheating but think about problems when the inbound data rate exceeds that which could be handled by any single machine while the query load could has extreme peaks and where even if you loose an entire country of data centers you want the customers to have good experience.
