Good Company But Little Room For Career Growth

Pros

Everybody is very friendly with each other and hierarchies are very flat, particularly in the regional offices. There is a part-of-a-family kind of vibe and lots of employees socialise outside work. The work environment is professional - but relaxed - with generally casual dress code and drinks/snacks on Fridays. There is free toast and coffee all day and newly refurbished social area with games corner and TV. Everybody gets treated fairly and as real people. The management is usually part of the team. Due to its versatility and need to cover a range of services and technology, it's a great place to start a career and gain experience on a variety of levels and skills.

Cons

Only limited room for growth, especially once moved outside the 1st line customer facing teams. As the hierarchy is flat, there are not many levels to move vertically. People leave quite regularly, not because they don't enjoy the work, but because they feel like there is little to look forward to in terms of a long term career. Although the hierarchy is flat, head office in Sydney is not well connected to the rest of the company and there is an element of HO making decisions with little communication. Due to lack of comms, decisions made are hard to understand and sudden changes oftentimes cause problems further down the line.

Thanks for taking the time to share your views, I agree it is challenging to create career opportunities in a flat structure but it is it certainly something we are looking into. Our Exec have worked really hard this financial year to improve communications and connect better with our international offices so I'm disappointed to hear that this does not appear to be helping. I'll make sure your feedback is relayed to the team and if you'd like to discuss further drop me an email at charlie.milne@siteminder.com

Pros

A more relax environment. Have a breakfast bar everyday and beer on Fridays. Open floor plan so it is not intimidating to speak to higher ups. Most departments interact very well. Most leads are happy to help you. The people they hire are usually extremely nice and form bonds outside of work. Great benefits. Pay was good.

Cons

Some management is never available. Constantly in meetings or just never at their desk. I saw managers who just did not want to deal with customers or with employees, you could see the annoyance on their faces. I know sales has a high turn around because they like putting people on performance reviews with 30 days to fix everything or you are gone. T&I who train and set up properties are pressured to set so many properties live that they put them live without proper training. The Service Desk then get the unhappy properties and get blamed if the properties threaten to drop off. Then there is the way each department is treated. Sales can get thousand dollar vacations, T&I regularly get paid lunches, excursions and a raffle where they get gift cards and stuff. Service Desk barely gets anything which was even noticed by the other departments. There is also favoritism from some management and the complete opposite where if you do anything to annoy them or make them angry, they will single an employee out and do what they can to run them off.

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback, I'm sorry to hear your experience wasn't more positive and that you felt Service Desk was not treated as well your peers. We are focused on supporting our staff to develop and grow and in April we are due to launch internal careers fairs to help our people to advance and explore the future their careers with us. I'm sorry this wasn't timely for you, I hope your new opportunity is proving a better fit.
