Pros

Best work life balance. Less work.

Cons

Recognition and Appreciation : 1. Rewards and recognition would lose its value if given in abundance. 2. Too much of favoritism in rewards and ratings. Micro management : If I would be the HOD of a department, 1. I would decentralize the ownership and decision making for activities to experienced individuals rather than getting involved in each activity. 2. I would not throw tantrums if a particular individual thinks an activity is not worthy of a discussion. 3. I would also question myself if I am encouraging worship culture by mandating every activity to be discussed. Lack of Technical Experts/Efforts: If I would be the HOD of a department, 1. I would first make the technical experts/employees hired from top colleges develop the competencies and then look for 3rd party vendors. 2. I would not let my employees become complacent by offshoring all the challenging work. I would not promote mediocrity by rewarding such 3rd party vendor accomplishments. Follow up Culture: 1. Insane amount of follow-ups required especially if you are driving any initiative of your own. Goal and KPI definition: 1. Goals and objectives for the next year should be defined by December end and the work reviewed at the start of next year. 2. Unclear KPIs leave a lot of gray area in deciding the final outcome and the rating. Meritocracy as a Value: 1. Doing market correction is justified but not at the cost of applauding and promoting mediocre efforts. 2. If ratings are solely given so as to bring people on par in terms of salary, there is no incentive left in going the extra mile for the rest of people.
