Failure to Scale Up

Pros

Lower Level Employees are Dedicated Professionals and Fantastic People that...

Cons

... are completely ignored by upper management. Upper Management lives in a world of it's own and don't understand how to run a business, how to run their business. This is what happens when you get a number of unqualified professionals turbo-charged to the higher ranks of a business. You end up with very intelligent, PhD holders who lack the skills of managing a business. Add to this a lack of humility to admit their mistakes and you have the perfect storm of a failing company.

Thanks for your review. We have an incredibly impressive track record and our management team have, in a very short period of time, led us to become one of the world's largest and most impactful academic publishers. We are growing again in 2025 and look forward to what the future holds.

A disregard for employees

Pros

Many roles (not all) are low stress, with no expectation of working beyond contracted hours. The annual leave allowance is higher than average, in the UK at least. Pension contributions are also fairly generous.

Cons

One of the few perks of working at Frontiers is the option to be fully remote, but they have announced they are removing this option. Insultingly, they are trying to make out that this is the desire of employees, when in fact we have not even been consulted. This comes after a difficult year where we have lost about a third of our colleagues to redundancy and had our pay frozen. Just as things were starting to look up, they have thrown us this curveball. Additionally, working hours are longer than the standard working week in the UK, and it’s been made clear this will never change, despite the fact we’ll now need to give up even more of our time to commute into the office.

Thanks for your thoughts. Work-life balance and the wellbeing for our employees are very important to us. We're creating a hybrid workplace framework that provides team members with opportunities to meet and visit office hubs more often. We find that in-person interactions are highly beneficial for innovation and collaboration, helping us thrive and grow.

Pros

Nice team and some very smart people

Cons

Anxiety permeates from the top down, it’s disguised in positive language and can-do posturing but it’s rooted in aggressive anxiety

Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed working with your team. Last year did cause some anxiety as we went through an uncertain period with redundancies. However we have stabilized and our usual positive and motivating culture is back in place.
