Cummins UK management an exclusive boys club

Pros

Original corporate policy of work life and balance is very good. However, it is disregarded in practice at least in some UK sites by local management.

Cons

If you are looking for a career in engineering design development in Cummins in the UK, it is pretty limited-majority of work here is of service. Most this work is done in US and they do not decentralise it. Pay is poor as compared to market and to get promoted, one has to be in the big boys club of the management-same faces keep on rotating in senior positions. Nepotism rife.

Pros

Wonderful people to work with. Very nice and easy work culture. Extremely talented and passionate Engineers and Managers in the Engineering domain. Those who have been around for more than 10 years are really smartest techies I have found. Less stressful work days as you have 8 to 5 pm easy job. Good place to start a career for few years. Lot to Learn!

Cons

Terrible Management. I seriously doubt what those Kelloggs, Stanfords, Booths and MITs doing there on the top. The Company is under a serious possible threat to run out of business in next few decades if it does not learn to retain Experienced Work force. The Management needs to be aware who and how many to hire. Random Hiring and Firing is crazy. They hire people, train them for 4 5 years and then remove them. This will not help. The most experienced will retire soon and now you are left with all College Grads to run your company.

Pros

-Co-workers are interesting and fun people, who build a relaxed and casual work environment. -Opportunities to work with suppliers and fellow Cummins employees from all over the world and build skills in the politics of engineering. -Young engineers are given the opportunity to run important projects, and many are interesting. -Generous severance package.

Cons

-Corporate systems are out-dated and clunky. Crashing business systems is a daily occurrence that interrupts and frustrates productivity and an employees ability to maintain deadlines. Efforts seem to be in place to address some of these things but the effectiveness has been underwhelming. -May seem like making a lot out of a little but remember you will spend 8 hours a day here. Offices for engineers at Jamestown Engine Plant are old, dirty, and depressing and HVAC/plumbing in the building is prone to make sudden loud annoying noises intermittently throughout the day, with no credible initiative from higher-ups to do anything about it. -Change process for print revisions etc, are painfully over-complex and slow mostly due to vestigial over-the-wall engineering practices still in place..
