I applied through an employee referral. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Uber
Interview
I was introduced to the recruiter by a friend and had a phone interview scheduled within a couple of business days. Spoke with the manager for one of Uber's data science teams. I was told by the recruiter to have internet access and a computer (which I thought was for a coding challenge) but we mostly went over my background. Towards the end he asked business oriented questions that relate to data science and machine learning.
We went in depth into the projects that I completed in graduate school and for work, so I suggest being able to articulate past projects well.
Overall it was a good experience as the hiring manager was really engaged and professional throughout the interview.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
There is a pool of people who took Uber rides from two cities that were close in proximity, for example Menlo Park and Palo Alto, and any data you could think of could be collected. What data would you collect so that the city the passenger took a ride from could be determined?
If some type of supervised classification algorithm was used to split the two populations, for example Support Vector Machine, what type of business decision would you make on points that appear close to the hyperplane?
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Uber in Mar 2015
Interview
The whole process took three months. I was first contacted by a recruiter, and had scheduled the phone call. But at the scheduled time, the recruiter did not call me and later found that the recruiter had left the company. I was later contacted by another recruiter and scheduled a phone call one week later. After phone call, I was assigned a offline test, which shows it should be able to finish in 4 hours. However, I finished it in 2 days since if you want the answers look better, the 4 hours would not be enough.
After I turned on the test result to recruiter, I was contacted by recruiter 1 weeks later and scheduled a phone interview, which is 2 weeks later.
The phone interview was only asking about the resume and then she gave me the real problem in Uber and let me answer how I should solve the problem. I thought my answers are not bad but I never got result after more than one week. I later let my friend in Uber to check my status, she told me that I was already rejected. But anyway, I never got result from the recruiter.
The whole process was so bad.
