Everything was very positive up until the 2nd interview stage which was delayed due to Covid19.
The initial phone calls and 1st 1:1 interview went very well and I was excited to move forward. After booking and rescheduling the 2nd stage interview numerous time, five weeks after the 1st interview I finally booked a video interview. I was a little apprehensive as it was my first video interview and it was scheduled for 6pm in the evening.
I knew the interview hadn’t gone well as the connection had a small delay which meant the natural conversational back and forth felt a little stunted, and the interviewer kept her head down for most of the conversation (assuming to make notes), cutting off eye contact and making it difficult to read her cues. I was disappointed with my performance. My nerves and the unease with the video setting definitely got the best of me.
I didn't receive any feedback or update for 3 weeks until I emailed inquiring about my application. As expected I received an email saying they wouldn’t be progressing with me. The feedback was I spoke to much and was unable to read the interviewer. Whilst I do agree with this feedback (I knew I had been speaking too much), I feel this is a little unjust as I couldn’t gauge the interviewer as well through a screen and speaking to the top of her head.
I feel this would have been very different scenario in a direct 1:1 setting. I wish the process had been fully paused until a face to face meeting could have been arranged.
